COMMON QUESTIONS

What must I wear?

Normal everyday gym attire should be worn. No pants or belts with pockets as fingers can be trapped and broken when drilling with a partner. No shoes are required. There are Team shirts and pants available at a cost for all practitioners.

It is preferable to purchase a GI for BJJ as there are numerous moves and submission that require you to grip onto the clothing.

Gum guards, MMA Gloves, Shin Pads should be purchased for MMA to protect your yourself from unnecessary injuries.

Affiliation

Lions Den SA is affiliated to MASA and MMA SA as well as recognized and promoted by the BJJ Federations in South Africa.

The gym is also internationally recognized in both the MMA and BJJ community.

We also have students who currently sit on the Regional  and National Executive Boards for MMA in South Africa.

Who Is the Owner and Head Coach of the Gym?

David Verster is a multi-disciplined Martial Artist, who has Black Belts in Ju Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He is also a boxer and grappler. He has fought in Local, National and International events and has numerous Titles to his name.  He has trained at the Gracie University in America to ensure that he could provide South Africa with the latest in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). He obtained his Black Belt from Brazilian 8th Degree Professor Marcus Soares who has direct lineage to the Gracie Family.

He is a family orientated man with Jiu Jitsu as his passion.

Can I get Graded in Jiu Jitsu Belt and MMA?

YES, one can now be graded in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA at Lion’s Den SA.(MMA  became an Internationally recognized Belt Structure in 2018.)

In Jiu Jitsu, practitioners are graded using the international Carlson Gracie test structure and in MMA, the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation Technical Progression Scheme is used to grade.

There are 6 Jiu Jitsu Belt Grades in Senior 16+ , namely White, Blue, Purple, Brown, Black and Red. In each belt category 4 stripes is awarded depending on your abilities.  As Black belt you can earn a degree up to 9th Degree. A Red Belt is only given to handful of people with over 31 years as a Black Belt.

There are 5 Jiu Jitsu Junior Belt Grades is from White, Grey, Yellow, Orange and Green. (at 16 a Green belt can be graded straight to Purple)

There are no Junior black belts given hence any practitioner with a blue belt or higher has spent many hours on the mat perfecting their skill level and guidance can be sought from them.

There are 14 MMA Belt Grades from Juniors in terms of the IMMAF Technical Progression Scheme, namely White, White-Yellow, Yellow, Yellow-Orange, Orange, Orange-Green, Green, Green-Blue, Blue, Blue-Purple, Purple, Purple-Brown, Brown and Black. Youth and Seniors use a different rule set for competition however although the syllabus is the same.

Class Schedule

Monday:   Durban (MMA 5:30pm to 7:00pm) – Pinetown (Jiu Jitsu 5:30pm to 7:30pm)

Tuesday:   Durban (Jiu Jitsu Juniors from 4:00pm to 5:00pm and Seniors 5:30pm to 7:30pm)

Wednesday: Durban (MMA 5:30pm to 7:00pm) – Pinetown (Jiu Jitsu 5:30pm to 7:30pm)

Thursday: Durban (Jiu Jitsu Juniors from 4:00pm to 5:00pm and Seniors 5:30pm to 7:30pm)

Saturday: Durban (Jiu Jitsu Seniors 7:30am to 9:00ams, Bully Proof  your Kid 09:00am to 10:00am and Juniors 10:00 to 11:00)

Jiu Jitsu classes class is broken up into two sessions, namely the Fundamentals and the Advanced. The gym is opened 45 minutes prior to class, for beginner and senior practitioners to spar, warm up and practise the last drill taught.  You must complete 20 fundamental classes before you can attend advance classes.

MMA classes include Fitness, Technical drills and Sparring in line with the IMMAF Syllabus

Kid’s classes are on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and classes are only offered in Durban now

Private Classes with David Verster are available for practitioners who requires any additional assistance in Jiu Jitsu & MMA.

Who are your teammates?

Your fellow teammates come from a multitude of backgrounds. In fact, there are medical doctors, a couple of practitioners with various doctorates, who are university lecturers and students. There are CEO’s,  senior police officers, scholars and practitioners with numerous other jobs who are Jiu Jitsu and or MMA athletes. .  We also have senior belt practitioners and coaches from other disciplines who have realized the need for ground fighting skills and MMA.

We have athletes who have entered World Championships in Jiu Jitsu and MMA as well as having Nationally Q qualified judges and referees who train with us. We also have students who are part of the various Sporting Boards in South Africa. We are considered as KZN’s most competitive gym and have practitioners entering  Local, National  and International events on a regular basis.

We also cater for people with disabilities.

We also have children’s classes for young kids starting from the age of 4 years old.
